Uncontrolled development, globalization and ecological crises underscore pressing concerns over the state of our living space. Human activities play a key role in shaping our landscape and environment. These activities result in unprecedented land use changes with ecological, socio-economic, and aesthetical impacts. As the awareness of these effects is rapidly growing, we see the need to increase the link between spatial planning science and meaningful collaborative engagement with social actors. This will help our society to make the best possible choices and ensure an economically prosperous and environmentally sustainable future.

Research at PLUS (Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems) concentrates on integrating the goals of sustainable development, economic viability, and good governance in spatial planning. While process-driven planning must remain important in our team effort, we focus on solving inverse problems to make inferences about sustainable spatial development patterns. Research in 3D visualization of landscape changes provides the bridge for the direct engagement of our society to help address the specific challenges we face.
