Optimising 3D landscape visualisations for information transfer
- The thesis focuses on how to edit and present spatial information for non-planners with the use of 3D visualisations and how the planning process is affected by information offered in this way. In a case study analysis, design principles for 3D visualisations useful in participative planning processes were specified. First, current knowledge on editing 3D visualisations concerning the aspects of legitimacy and validity were combined with design recommendations for images from the sciences of communication, media psychology and media pedagogy. Second, different types of 3D visualisations with various designs were tested iteratively in participative planning workshops for a case study site, the Entlebuch UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (Switzerland). Through interviews and observation, the participants’ reactions were collected and then analysed using a combination of Grounded Theory and qualitative content analysis. The functions of the 3D visualisations that serve the processes of information comprehension and communication and the functions these should fulfil in the planning process were used to measure the quality of the respective designs of the 3D visualisations. The results reveal that one design that fits all is not available, but some basic design principles can be proposed within a user-specific editing of the 3D visualisations. In addition, differences in the effects the various 3D visualisation types have on the participants and on the style of the discussion were significant. The presentation of abstract visualisations leads mostly to discursive discussions that can be used to detect wishes, problems, opinions and topics for further elaboration. In contrast, the realistic 3D visualisations evoke very intuitive reactions and trigger a high identification with the shown area. These are useful for collecting local knowledge, particularly practical experience and perceptions. It should be noted that 3D visualisations are not useful in all phases in the moderation of the workshop, e.g., during a brainstorming session they have been shown to be a hindrance. A portfolio facilitates the application of the results in planning practice and provides a basis for the further development of design recommendations. Full version
