Effective public participation in the development of spatial concepts is enhancing their acceptance and implementation. An important prerequisite for a negotiation process to be accepted by all participants is a common information base. Conventional planning instruments such as texts or maps have proved to be not very useful in communication with laymen. In contrast, GIS-based 3D visualisations have been attributed with a great potential for assisting the effective visual communication of a plan’s contents. Though fast-developing computer technology allows the production of increasingly sophisticated and realistic 3D visualisations, the technical possibilities currently exceed the knowledge on their correct application. Research of the LVML - Landscape Visualization and Modeling Lab focuses on analysing and enhancing the added value of 3D landscape visualisations in spatial planning processes.
