Rolf Signer, born 1948, studied first rural development engineering (Kultur-Ingenieur) at the ETH Zurich. Later he completed the post-graduate studies in spatial planning and earned the Ph. D. (Dr. sc. techn.) at the ETH Zurich.

He works as a planning consultant in Switzerland, – running an office for town- and regional planning in Zurich. Works include projects of urban and regional scale in Switzerland and abroad. Central topics of practical and scientific interest are the integrated development of space and infrastructure, especially rail, in Germany and Switzerland with fokus on the North-South-Transversal between Rotterdam (NL) and Genoa (I).

As a member of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISoCaRP) he was head of the Swiss National Delegation between 2000 and 2006. Since 2009 he is president of the Zurich Study Society for Planning, Architecture and Mobility (in German: ZBV – Zürcher Studiengesellschaft für Bau- und Verkehrsfragen).
