Code 24 – EGTC

Corridor Development Rotterdam Genoa – European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation

The completion of the alpine transit plan in Switzerland is followed by a quantum leap into the development of the railway network. Along with the construction for the access routes, a high-speed axis for European north-south railway transport has emerged. This axis connects several continent’s economic powerhouses with one another. However, there are serious gaps and bottlenecks both north and south of the new alpine base tunnels. These gaps and bottlenecks will limit the service capability of the railway, especially in the development possibilities of the areas along the route. Differing interests in the use of these areas will delay the development of the railway infrastructure and the settlements if the ways and means are not found to coordinate these demands collectively and across borders.
CODE24 addresses this task. Through the Interreg project CODE24, the Institute of Spatial Planning of ETH Zurich, together with fourteen international partners, is intensely pursuing questions of spatial and infrastructural development along this European axis. As this is the first project – and until now only project – in the programme to be designated a ‹strategic initiative›, this emphasises its importance. With the presentation of the joint spatial development strategy for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor, the Interreg project CODE24 was successfully concluded. Henceforth, the newly established European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) for the Rhine-Alpine-Corridor will be be committed to the implementation of this strategy.
